Chief Financial Officer

The UIP Companies, Inc. (UIP) is a vertically integrated real estate investment, development, asset and property management, and general contracting firm specializing in multi-family, mixed-use, retail, and light industrial properties predominantly in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, including assets in DC and its close in suburbs, Baltimore, MD and Arlington, VA. UIP is searching for an energetic, solution-focused, and collaborative Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to head up our corporate accounting and finance functions. The CFO is a key member of the executive leadership and directs the organization’s financial, planning, and accounting practices as well as its relationships with lending institutions, investors, and the financial community. The CFO oversees and directions the accounting functions and team and participates in the firm’s strategic company planning, as directed by the Chief Operating Officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a financial infrastructure for a vertically integrated real estate development and management group with four distinct divisions that operate with the efficiency and flexibility to respond to the demands of a growth-oriented real estate investment firm
  • Participate in acquisitions, work with the Acquisition Teams on financial capitalization strategy, and liaise with investors and financial institutions
  • Oversee the implementation of accounting set-up for new projects, including ground-up mixed-use projects, heavy lift renovations, and stabilized property repositions
  • Oversee and direct treasury, budgeting, audit, tax, accounting, purchasing, long-range forecasting, and insurance activities for the firm
  • Create, implement, and maintain a plan to ensure compliance with audit and tax expectations of investors
  • Direct the Controller in providing and directing procedures necessary to maintain proper records and to afford adequate accounting controls and services
  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Accounting and Development, Property Management, and General Contracting Accounting functions, including billing and accounts receivable monitoring and collections, and accounts payable and vendor remittances
  • Appraise the firm’s financial position and issues periodic reports on financial stability, liquidity, and growth
  • Direct and coordinate the establishment of budget programs
  • Responsible for accurate and timely financial reporting, as well as interpreting the financial results
  • Responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements, analyses, and management reports
  • Oversee monthly work paper generation on both cash and accrual basis and approve accrual entries
  • General ledger review and maintenance
  • Coordinate with tax consultants and outside auditors
  • Oversee bank reconciliations, cash projections and treasury management
  • Manage and develop department staff
  • Direct and analyze studies of general economic, business, and financial conditions and their impact on the organization's policies and operations
  • Analyze operational issues impacting functional groups and the whole institution, and determine their financial impact
  • Evaluate and recommend business partnering opportunities
  • Establish and maintain contacts with financial institutions, investors, and the investment community
  • Together with the company’s Principals, participate in strategic planning, budgeting and forecasting.


Qualifications and Attributes

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, CPA preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting and financial controllership, preferred CFO experience with a real estate firm, in both residential and commercial properties
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents, respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints, and communicate effectively to a variety of stakeholders
  • Expertise in Yardi property management software and QuickBooks, preferred
  • Knowledge of Accounting software; Database software; Payroll systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
  • Experienced in the preparation of financial statements
  • Working knowledge of strategies and concepts to minimize tax burden
  • Experienced in the preparation of operating statements
  • Ability to work collaboratively and develop strong partnerships with peers both inside and outside of the company
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to grow and motivate others and build highly effective teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in persuasive communications
  • Proven ability to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial, fast-moving atmosphere
